Tell us about yourself!

I'm from Linlithgow, in central Scotland and I began piping aged 7. I study bagpipes, scots song and whistles at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, I also hold grade 8 in classical Trombone. I'm pipe major of the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland and I now compete with Inveraray and District Pipe Band after having previously played with Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia for many years. I've performed in many countries such as: New Zealand, France, Germany, USA, Switzerland and the Czech Republic as well as appearing on BBC Hogmanay Live and performing solo on the roof of Murrayfield Stadium. I perform as one half Celtic Connections Danny Kyle award winning duo Ross Miller and Charlie Stewart.

How does your music impact & inspire your life?

I spend the vast majority of my time doing something music related. Through my teaching I hope to inspire the younger generation of pipers as well as equally being inspired by them in return. I compose and arrange a lot of music and I get to perform this as part of my course and in different projects I'm involved in. I'm playing all the time in many different contexts and this allows me to learn and develop new skills from a variety of other musicians.

Why the bagpipes over any other instruments?

I've always loved the pipes, when I was a wee boy I would make bagpipes out of a bottle, kitchen roll tubes and a recorder, over time these became more elaborate before finally graduating onto the real thing aged 7. I play other instruments but none compare to the feeling you get when the pipes are going well in a band or solo. The pipes have always been the instrument I've wanted to play more than anything else.

What are your musical goals? Where do you see yourself in five years time?

I'd love to be part of a band and do some touring whilst I'm still young before settling down into a teaching job whilst still performing regularly. I'm also writing a couple of songs at the moment as well which I'd like to get out there. I'd also like to continue to improve all aspects of my piping and continue to do both competitive piping as well as folk piping.
